The integumentary system protects the body from various kinds of damage such as loss of water. It also includes scales, feathers, hooves, hairs and nails. It has a variety of other functions means it may protect the deeper tissues, regulate body temperature, and excrete wastes. It detects pain, pressure, sensation, and temperature.

Skin

The skin is composed of epidermis and dermis. It gives colour to the skin because it contains melanocytes. The deepest layer of the epidermis also contains nerve endings contains connective tissues, vessels, glands, follicles, hair roots, sensory nerve endings, and muscular tissue. The deepest layer hypodermis made up of adipose tissue.

Epidermis

The top layer of skin made up of epithelial cells called the epidermis. It contains blood vessels and the main functions od epidermis is protection, absorption of nutrients, and homeostasis.

Dermis

The middle layer of skin, composed of dense irregular connective tissue known as the dermis. The dermis contains two layers, the papillary layer consists of the areolar connective tissue and the reticular layer which is the deep layer of the dermis having dense irregular connective tissue. These layers give elasticity allowing stretching and conferring flexibility, while also resisting distortions, wrinkling, and sagging.

Hypodermis

The hypodermis is a layer beneath the skin known as the subcutaneous layer. It is composed of a type of cell known as adipocytes specialized in accumulating and storing fats. These cells are grouped together in lobules separated by connective tissue. The hypodermis reserve energy.
